II Timothy 4:8 In the early morning of December 3rd, 2021 while surrounded by his family at his bedside, God whispered into Rufus’s ear, “Well Done, My Good and Faithful Servant!” Rufus M. McFarland, 73 years young entered the world on October 13th, 1948 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to the late Robert L. McFarland and Josephine Vines-McFarland. Rufus along with family came to Norfolk, Va when he was eleven years old. He attended Norfolk Public Schools and obtained his diploma, thereafter entered into Norfolk Vocational Technical School where he earned a certification in welding. After receiving his welding certification and numerous hours of working on truck containers, chassis, and required maintenance he became a “Master Welder.” He committed more than 50 years to welding and retired from D.D. Jones Transfer & Warehouse. Our dearly beloved was a jack of all trades, tending to his garden, tailoring his own suits, reading and teaching the meanings of life. If he was not sifting through thrifted items to find gems and treasures or playing chess he was watching movies. He cherished all accolades that his children and grandchildren obtained. He was a man of expanding knowledge, and a genuine advocate for higher education. Rufus never met a stranger, if you were to befriend him you were considered family. He was a wise man and an avid reader of the Bible. Rufus accepted God as his Lord and Savior at New Hope United Church of Christ. He later joined Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. Rufus was a faithful servant of the number three usher board until his health started to decline. One unforgettable thing about Rufus is he lived a great life, “I did everything that I wanted to do,” a simple man that did things that gave him peace. Rufus leaves to cherish a devoted wife of 45 years Phyllis H. McFarland; mother, Josephine Vines-McFarland; one Beautiful and Loving daughter, Xaviera L. McFarland; two Handsome and Hardworking sons, Hannabal McFarland Sr. and Tyree M. McFarland Sr., a goddaughter Ester Wrim. Along with his joyful eleven grandchildren, Imani A. McFarland, Tyonna Gibson, Naja McFarland, Hanna McFarland, TyAsia McFarland, Hannabal McFarland Jr., Tyree M. McFarland Jr., Savannah McFarland, Tya McFarland, Javeontay Mann and a daughter in-law. He was survived by three sisters Barbara Hayes, Portsmouth,Va; Lillie Brinkley (Quentin), Chesapeake, Va; Delphine Freeman, Norfolk, Va; one brother Moses McFarland (Loretta), Hagerstown, Md. Rufus was predeceased by brothers Joseph L. McFarland, Robert E. McFarland and Nathaniel McFarland. He also leaves to cherish numerous memories that we will forever hold in the hearts of his loving nieces and nephews, childhood friends and community that he dedicated the verse, “If I can help somebody along the way, then my living will not be in vain!” He believed it, he spoke it, he did it all!
