TikTok Indonesia Bans Political Fundraising via Live Feature

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChina-based video-sharing app TikTok Indonesia announced today, Nov. 28, that politicians or political parties are prohibited from collecting funds or donations for political purposes on its Live feature.

“We do not want our platform to become a means to collect political donations,” TikTok Indonesia’s spokesperson, Faris Mufid, said at Bunga Rampai Restaurant in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 28.

He said TikTok will automatically turn off the 'gifts' feature from accounts belonging to politicians, political parties, and the government which are categorized as government, politician, and political party accounts (GPPPA). This feature allows accounts on Live to receive donations from viewers.

The ban also applies to other accounts such as influencers. Faris said that his site would detect such political fundraising activity.

“If GPPPA accounts want to reach audiences, they are welcome, but not paid ones,” he added.

Despite paid live activities, the GPPPA accounts can create political content while adhering to the existing community guidelines.

TikTok Indonesia today launched an in-app 2024 Election Guide, which provides credible and authoritative information on the country's upcoming election. This feature is part of the efforts to promote election integrity and combat misinformation, especially during the campaign period and ahead of the February 2024 poll.
